Zakir Hossain, Chief Executive, Nagorik Uddyog

Zakir Hossain a human rights and environmental activist, specialization in human rights protection of marginalised, socially excluded people, including dalit and access to justice for rural disadvantaged communities. He has a Masters in Economics from Dhaka University. He played key role to organise Dalit community in Bangladesh and as outcome of his continuous effort a national platform emerged called ‘Bangladesh Dalit and Excluded rights Movement (BDERM), established in 2008 and currently he is the advisor of BDERM. He is also one of the active key member of Bangladesh Environment Movement (known as BAPA) and Sushaner Jonnon Nagorik (known as SUJAN).Mr. Zakir has been involved in number of research work and author/ co-authored of research paper. His organization NU works across Bangladesh to strengthen local government, access to justice, raise awareness of people’s basic human rights and to build people’s capacity to pursue and realise these rights, with specific focuses on rights of the socially excluded community and dalits.  NU also works for right to information, informal sector workers rights, and human right advocacy at the national and international level.NU recognises that democratic elections in Bangladesh will, by themselves are insufficient to fulfil democracy and those poor, marginalised and disadvantaged women and men must be given the power to participate in, and contribute to, the decision-making processes that affect their lives. zhossain@agni.com, info@nuhr.org, Cell: +88-01713081852
